Things to Do in Byron Bay

Cape Byron Lighthouse and the headland walk
The loop from the Pass up to the lighthouse is a must do when you are in Byron. Experience panoramic views along the coast, glimpse whales breaching in winter and spring, and experience the most easterly point of mainland Australia. The complete loop takes around one hour from the Pass carpark and is best taken at sunset or sunrise for panoramic dusky skies over the clear Byron ocean.

Main Beach, the Pass and Wategos
Main Beach is a stroll off Jonson Street, and is flagged and patrolled in peak season. Walk north along the beach to Belongil and south to the Pass, where surfers ride long waves sweeping around the most easterly point. Wategos, hidden behind the headland, is famous for staggeringly expensive real estate and stunning views as far as the Gold Coast on a clear day. Don’t miss the famous beach side markets on the first Sunday of every month.

Byron town and the Arts and Industry Estate
Byron bustles with cafés, restaurants and shops in the centre of town catering to a range of cuisines. Get a drink at the famous Beach Hotel, or experience live music there and at the Great Northern Hotel. Party late into the night at one of the nightclubs in town. Walk along the beach or grab a ride to the Arts and Industry Estate for micro-breweries, homewares and Byron artisan goods.

Bangalow
Take a day trip to Bangalow, a heritage village just fifteen minutes from the Bay. Known for boutiques, cafe culture and a sense of yesteryear, the town features Saturday organic food markets and a bustling monthly market on the 4th Sunday of the month at the Showgrounds, attracting all manner of goods and wares from the region and beyond.

Brunswick Heads
Want to experience a slower pace reminiscent of Byron Bay a few decades ago? Brunswick Heads has the feel, with an eclectic mix of shops and eateries, perched on the clear and cool waters of the Brunswick River. Spend a day relaxing in the park, paddling in the river, or at one of the protected or ocean beaches minutes from the town. Go barefoot, bring your swimmers and get a dose of Northern Rivers ambience.

The hinterland & beyond
Ready to explore? Minyon Falls, about 30 minutes by car from Byron, is a spectacular reward after a short trek; its cool waters tumbling down spectacular rockfaces with views of the Nightcap National Park. Visit nearby Mullumbimby where the counter-culture revolution still lingers between bustling pubs and crystal shops. Or head out to Nimbin where it all started, a small picturesque town nestled between rocky peaks and verdant valleys. For a big day out, grab a ride to Mount Warning National Park to stand in the shadow of a now dormant volcano that formed the rich soils and landscape of the Northern Rivers.

Getting here
Three airports serve Byron Bay. Ballina is the closest, Gold Coast is the busiest for interstate flights, and Brisbane has the widest choice of routes. Byron Shuttle Bus runs door-to-door airport transfers from all three, for up to 7 passengers.
